Wii homebrew: Tetris! (fully playable)

Posted: February 24th, 2008 | Author: Justin Nolan | Filed under: Homebrew, Wii | 6 Comments »

Just last week I posted about the Wii ELF loader and early homebrew. Those early demos had no input, so weren’t of much use. Programmer extraordinaire Auby now brings us the first fully playable wii homebrew, Tetris!

If you’ve got a copy of Zelda: TP, an SD to gamecube adapter, and a spare SD card, head over here to download and try it out yourself. Here are my abbreviated instructions:

1. Download the Twilight Hack, and follow these instructions to install on your SD card.
2. Download tetris.elf, and dd it to your SD card, as instructed here.
3. You’re now ready, so boot it the normal way and Tetris should load.

So what’s up with this Tetris obsession of yours?

I would have posted this even if it wasn’t Tetris. Playable homebrew on the wii = a big deal.

Homebrew is pretty cool, the biggest problem is that a lot of the stuff that is released is well… crap.

Unfortunately the biggest problem is the best stuff tend to be emulators. I just hope someone takes this and does something cool with it.

As far as homebrew games go, I would tend to agree. But when you look at apps like Xbox Media Center, you see the potential. Xbox Media Center plus emulators was all you needed to make the first Xbox a very justified purchase.

As far as the Wii goes, it would be cool if they figure out how to make custom channels with various functions. I thought for certain nintendo would release tons of cool channels, but its all been crap (apart from the web browser).

That would be cool to see what people might be able to do with channels. I saw an article over at slashdot today that they have booted into Linux and have a running mp3 player and a (as I said earlier) SNES emulator.

I was hoping that the XNA Studio deal would bring around cool things for the XBox like what you have suggested for new channels for the Wii.
