Guitar God Tom Morello boss in GHIII
September 11th, 2007 | by Tarun Kunwar |Ok, so for the most part, I hate this game. If you’re going to become a Guitar Hero freak and spend countless hours learning how to pretend play a plastic toy, LEARN THE FRIGGIN INSTRUMENT. It’s not that hard. When I think about the level of ease on all the songs in this game, it would seriously take a n3wb guitarist the same amount of time to learn the tabs as it does getting a 100 note streak.
It looks like they’ve added some very influential guitarists to the GHIII lineup (mainly Slash from Guns N’ Roses and now Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) RIP.
The Rage song on the game………….BULLS ON PARADE!!! Activision has stated that players will need to “emulate some of Morello’s extremely innovative guitar-playing antics.” How he makes those freakishly amazing sounds with his geetar you axe?
I’ve met Tom once; he’s an ass. Nevertheless, this is innovation at its finest.
Who knows J-Town, maybe a Bright Eyes song for GHIV? BOOMERANG BURN!

I really don’t like that you’ve added fuel to the fire of the whole “play a real guitar” argument against Guitar Hero. Let me tell you that I do play the guitar, and I’m fairly good, if I may say so myself. I also play Guitar Hero, though. The reason? It’s fun. That’s probably why everyone else plays it, too.
Anyway…. Man, Carson Daly is a tool.

I guess I have a serious musician’s bias towards this game…
I’ve played GH and imo, this shit can NEVER be as fun as the real thing. It’s really a slap in the face of all things genuine in music.
Harmonix should have figured out a way to put a real guitar in our hands so that we could at least learn some chords or intervals or something.

That’s the problem. You are looking at it as a guitar game, when it’s not. It’s a rhythm game. Boom Boom Rocket isn’t a fireworks game and doesn’t have people up in arms about learning to put on epic fireworks show. Tony Hawk doesn’t cause arguments about skating for real. Forza doesn’t cause arguments about driving your real car. They are games, just games. When you start to take them too seriously maybe it’s time to put down the controller for a while and get some perspective. Nobody expects them to replicate the experience perfectly, but at a cost of a lack of complexity.
Why should Harmonix try to figure out a way to put a real guitar in your hands, when Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, et al.. already have?
And have you thought to wonder how many people now play a real guitar because of the GH series?

Tim,
If it were a rhythm game, it would be called drum hero or bass hero. And last time I checked, you’re playing lead guitar, not rhythm.
By the way, i’m referring to games that have “replicas” of the real thing (like donkey conga). I understand your arguments, it’s just that a lot of people have convinced themselves that picking up an instrument is impossible when it’s really quite simple.(MUSCLE MEMORY). And i feel that Harmonix is giving them a cop out in the form of a fun 4 button whammy bar guitar.
It’s really not hard for them to figure out a way to put a real guitar in our hands. yeah gibson fender and ibanez have already done that, but even for starter equipment it’ll cost you no less than 250 (amp + chords + guitar + other shit).
How about making a guitar hero guitar that has five frets with smaller buttons? This way people can at least learn arpeggios and intervals while they’re playing. Doesn’t seem too unrealistic.
Don’t get me wrong, i never said it wasn’t a fun game.

Yeah, your definitely looking at it from a musicians point of view. By rhythm game I didn’t mean as in a rhythm section, but that you strike a sequence of buttons in rhythm to a music track. ala DDR, Boom Boom Rocket, etc… (and GH2 allows you to play rhythm guitar in co-op on some songs
)
They may be giving them a cop out, but your assumption is that everybody that plays WANTS to play a real guitar and feels they can’t. I’m sure there are people that just play the game because it’s fun to pretend without actually wanting to play a real guitar. Why does it have to be educational?
Your suggestions are perfectly reasonable, but I think it would hurt the popularity some by making the game more complex than some people are willing to put up with. As it stands now, any yahoo can pick it up and in a few minutes be completing songs, and feel like they are accomplishing something instead of hunting the neck for a tiny button. Remember that in a ‘rhythm game’ you are penalized for missing the note window. Beginners playing a real guitar have no penalty for missing the rhythm other than it sounds off so they have time to make sure their fingers are in the right place.
For the record, the guitar may have come easy for you, but it doesn’t come easy for everyone. I struggled with it for years, and I still can’t play like I think I ought to be able to after all this time. So, no it isn’t necessarily ‘really quite simple’ for everybody.

DUR!! I’m an idiot. The amount of buttons on the controller are dictated by the amount of buttons the console supports. Currently, the consoles do not support enough buttons to make your suggestions possible. This probably fixable through a system update but is likely never to happen. Also, I know that some people play with the standard controller (why I don’t know, but I know some that do) which would not be possible with an extended number of buttons.

I do play the real guitar as well, I have been playing off and on for 5 years. I personally love the game, and in ways, it has improved my guitar capabilities. For example, my pinky finger has become increasing stronger and faster from playing the game. Harmonix didn’t come into the video game business to make a music sim, their companies point was to help people learn to play music, and even though you are playing lead, you still have to follow the beat, if a guitarist doesn’t follow the beat, it sounds like absolute garbage. Sure, the concept of sitting there playing with a plastic guitar seems a little cheesy, but the point is that it is fun. And last time I checked, that was the reason I played video games in the first place.

Sorry to double post, but also, a lot people are intimidated by a real guitar with six strings around 20 frets (depending on the neck) so Guitar Hero also makes it simple to get into.

I can’t believe that this point is being argued.
It’s a GAME people. If you don’t like it, don’t play it. It’s a free country.
Sheesh.

Oh please I play guitar and keys and the whole “learm to play the real thing” argument is infinitley pointless and retarded. If poeple want to, they will play real intruments. If they just wanna play a fun rhythm video game.

They will. If anything, GH/RB has/will inspire people to pick up real instruments.

the GH series is fun, rockband is funner.
i have never got my bass petal foot in motion with my hands, until now. i have been playing RB for 2 days now (10hrs total approx) and i can now play drums on hard or expert on all the songs. I play guitar, bass, piano, & trombone.
Now im gonna get some drums and start botherin the neighbors.
I play instruments and that helps me but its frikin harder than real guitar on some songs.
Rockband!! go get it, you wont want to play GH much more. Maybe to shred up the guitar battle vs. tom morello that’s always fun to dual out to.
Anyone who doesnt like guitar hero/ rockband go play your boring old 6 string by yourself. Why are you on a online forum complaining about stuff.
Cause you’re a troll. look it up if you are uneducated. Any dumbass hillbilly can pick up a guitar, but it takes a genius to set up xbox 360 and xbox live and all of that crap. i want to play video games and i gotta mess with a CAT5 before playing. fuck!
y’all suck. i got Rockband @ 1am the night it came out (no lines @ walmart). Yea i paid $170 but guess what, i got it like that. you wish you could buy this game but you are a broke ass hater. bitches! im never coming back to this form so write what you will. peace! fuck you people!
