MGS4 gameplay video, Metal Gear Online
July 25th, 2007 | by Justin Nolan |I’ll be frank and honest… I’ve never played a Metal Gear game, and I’ve never wanted to. I tried one out about 7 years ago at my cousins house. He was all into the game, and I just didn’t get it. MGS4 is now coming, and people are hailing it as the second coming. I still don’t get it.
Graphics: The graphics are great, but nothing we haven’t seen before. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics are good, but they don’t make the game stick out (and yes, I watched the HD 720p video).
Gameplay: Again, I don’t see anything to write home about. Not only is the stealth ridiculous and unrealistic (pretend to be a statue? turn argyle and dry hump the floor… and you are completely invisible to the enemy? squeeze a guys balls to knock him out? turn into a barrel and roll around?), but it looked pretty boring to me.
Homoerotics: Probably my biggest qualm is just how gay the game looks… literally. Am I the only one that DOESN’T want to look at Snake’s ass in those tights for a prolonged period of time? Not only is the statue camouflage gimmicky, does he need to grab the statues package? Does he need to look like he is humping the floor when he crawls? Is the “judo” hump kill necessary? Again with the packages… can you stay away from the enemies balls?
And no, reading porn mags in-game doesn’t hide your homosexual tendencies. Again, another WTF moment.
I get it’s suppose to be humorous. The impression that I’m left with is that this game is a joke.
Oh yes… MGS4 is going to be online! Oh… no it’s not. Metal Gear Online will be online. Why not split the multiplayer mode from a game and sell it as it’s own game. We can milk those Metal Gear fans dry!
Please let me know what I’m missing.
And before you start flaming, I do have a PS3. I’m dying for some good games (LBP couldn’t get here sooner).

haha, i didn’t think anyone else would notice the “package grabbing.” Along with those tights, Snake indeed looks like a flamer. Here’s to a costume change option.
Yeah, and if you’re putting someone in a sleeper, (which is btw a jujitsu move not judo thank you very much), I’m pretty sure you don’t have to hump them.
I’ve only played sons of liberty once, but i do remember that it kicked ass.
We would be fools not to get this game for PS3 dude. MGS has a very good track record.

I’ve been hearing about metal gear for year and year, and I know it has a good track record… but with who? I’ve come to the conclusion that Sony “fanboys” are complete toolbags, with an age and IQ around 12.
I say this because while I was reading the playstation forums and stuff, the general consensus was this:
“OMG nudie mags YESSS!!!”
“He grabbed his PENIS! LOLzz”
“OMGz the graphics are so much better than the haloz! That means its more fun!”
“You can look at pictures of GIRLS! This game will rocks!!!”
Yes, I actually read all these things (not worded this way, but this is really how these people think).
I think I figured out why I dont get it… I’m not a complete moron.

Is this a game review site or a site where you state your opinions? In semi article it seemed as though you where trying to sway peoples opinion of who likes the game to dislike.

Not trying to sway, just expressing…
He’s playing down the hype just like I’m playing down the hype on Crapassassin’s Creed.

The people on those forums are clearly idiots. The great track record that MGS has is with people who love games. It’s a great action/stealth game. It’s not quite Splinter Cell (because you can usually just kill people, and there usually aren’t missions that end when you get spotted). Plus, it’s not a set of missions. It’s pretty much a huge, consistent area in which you accomplish objectives. It’s one giant mission, which, in my opinion, is more realistic. The mission changes over time, and you adapt to it by setting new objectives. It’s not cheesy in the “Objective completed” way, either. When you’ve done something, you know.
The reason there are so many cutscenes is because Kojima originally wanted to be a movie director. He certainly does a good job of telling a story. Stating that the reason someone doesn’t like MGS is because it’s half gameplay and half cutscenes is just a cop-out. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it because either the story just doesn’t stick with you, or you just honestly don’t like the gameplay.
I can see how stealth gamers (Splinter Cell) might not like it, because there’s a Hell of a lot more action than stealth.
Anyway, that’s it for my rant. I’m guessing that you just don’t like the gameplay, Justin.

MarkN: This is a blog first and foremost so we do share opinions. It’s also an open forum for your to share your opinion back.
And I’m not saying that I don’t like the game, since as I’ve said, I haven’t played the game. I was just posing a question: why all the hype? The consensus seems to be because of the games golden track record.
I’m still a little bewildered at how enamored people are at the nudie mags and other childish aspects of the game.

This is why splinter cell came out. A better stealth game that is actually realistic.

the reason for the hype is because of mgs4 story. Unlike all games, the metal gear series makes you think about certain topics such as: Who or what are the patriots? how did liquid get control of PMC’s? What happend to raiden? its not always about the game being realistic. Very few people cared about Halo 3’s story. Most of the halo 3 fans only cared about the shooting and multiplayer.
