Wave Goodbye, Co-op
Posted: July 18th, 2007 | Author: Tarun Kunwar | Filed under: Halo 3 | 15 Comments »Dammit. I can’t believe this is happening but as of now, there shall be no Halo 3 Co-op online. Gwaa!?! “We know that people want it and we’re trying to make it happen. I think the biggest problem for us for online co-op is that we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player. That’s a significant challenge,” says Bungie’s Frank Conner.
Ok, I’ll ignore this for now and ignorantly keep my hopes up that maybe somewhere down the line there will be an update that will fix this crap. C’MON BUNGIE! “If we can make it happen in a way that works well, we will – and if it works badly, we won’t.”
Excuse me while I sob.
Wow, that’s devastating. I don’t really understand why it’s such a challenge. Gears can do it, and other crappy games can do it. So what gives?
I’m tempted to say “isn’t this ‘next-gen’?”, but then I remembered a good number of PS3 games and all Wii games have no online whatsoever. And in a sense, it makes sense to focus on one area of game instead of trying to do everything under the sun, and coming up short.
Seriously. And Gears’ Co-op wasn’t that much fun.
BUT GEARS DID CRAP UP TOO…Don’t forget, they didn’t have a party system. I mean, wtf.
This defeats the purpose of Xbox live developers!
We know that people want it and we’re trying to make it happen. I think the biggest problem for us for online co-op is that we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player. That’s a significant challenge.
They only thing that is happening is that they said it is a hard challenge and they are trying to have it in the game. Why is the internet posting a quote from bungie that doesn’t say word exactly of. Halo 3 won’t have online coop. Seriously I am not going to believe this until Bungie says it exactly or when I get Halo 3 and there is no online coop. Please don’t go with all the website that have speculations that look like the truth.
There has been an outrage of threads and internet activity concluding that Halo 3 will offer no Online Co/op. This could be true or possibly not. Every website I go to it depicts the negative of official statements, and that when people see a conflict they automatically assume that the designer is going to take the easy way out. Meaning no Halo 3 Online Co/op. The truth is that Bungie’s Quote doesn’t show enough substantial evidence to conclude there is not going to be any Online Co/op.
My Proof:
“We’re not dumb, we know that people want it and we’re trying to make it happen. I think the biggest problem for us for online co-op is that we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player. That’s a significant challenge. And there’s lots of design things you could do to prevent that from happening, but they would make it not feel like Halo anymore. If we can make it happen in a way that works well, we will – and if it works badly, we won’t.â€
The words from Bungie them self are in fact stating that making a balanced fun Co/op experience for both you and your spartan partner is quite challenging. No where I have seen the exact words of there will be no Online Co/op other than what Website and Magazines Conclude from; from what Bungie’s lines tell us is that they are trying implement Co/Op, but they are having difficulties doing so to be fun. I believe that people are jumping to unreasonable conclusions that are only support half the facts.
What every you decide is up to you. My believes tell me that their is going to Online Co/op, but the only way we know for sure is that if Microsoft or Bungie Studios tells us gamers first hand or I pop in my Halo 3 disk and see for my self. What ever happens I will back up Bungie’s choice 110%.
Dr Dmoney: When a company has bad news, they two step around it and try to spin it as positive as possible. The game is two months from launching. If they were planing on having it working, they wouldn’t have opened their mouths. It’s just damage control. If bungie didn’t tell us about it now, in two months you would have had screaming fanboys raining on their launch. They want GOOD publicity at launch. They need to take the trash out now.
wow. thats really dissapointing. i cant believe it. i had my hopes up too. oh well at least its still online…right? jk.
Justin Nolan. That was my exact response to this whole thing. You also have to consider that all that stuff in that issue of EGM close to a month old. So just maybe they’ll have it ready for launch.
I have seen the scans and they do say that there will be no online co/op at launch and it could be update later. Also you have to realize that it is old news (when written.)

One reason why they might not be able to do it is due to the size of the world they are creating. Gears of War could do it because everything is linear, you can’t jump so you can’t get out of barriers and loads bad guys statically when you reach a certain point. Bungie is trying lots of new stuff like random placement of enemies and AI decisions based on enemy location. When you have two (or the rumored four) people playing a game, there is lots of calculations that need to happen. In order to make the game feel the same. In multiplayer, because there are no bots, the only data that needs to be sent is what the other players are doing and is sent to the host, the host machine then determines if a gun shot hit. So who knows, they might be able to fix it before launch, and if not, a future patch is always a possiblity.
Thats correct. In single player, you have AI to contend with. When a player moves or shots, the AI is calculated on the local 360 and responds to the player. When you have two different consoles with two players, the AI could respond differently, which is when the shit hits the fan.
This is BS! H3 should have co-op with out question I mean really, Co-op has been around forever even when I started online gaming playing Doom with a 14400 modem between 2 crappy 100 MHz computers. And when you respawned you would be well over a mile away trying to catch up with your partner. That one scenario in the game has some of the best developers baffled? I don’t buy it, they have plenty of ideas on how to screw us and try and get us to pay over a hundred bucks for the special special edition? ” What do we do there are 3 marines in a warthog with you oh no how will we ever change that” Come on guys you have had the Dev kits the longest and still we wait for a game that so far in not eye-popping in the graphics department. Graphics are not everything you say? True but then where are the game modes like Co-op. A Quake launch pad and a quad don’t cut it! I guess my only Co-op player will be that sh!tty plastic helmet that i get for 130 bucks. Peace!
Well here is the final quote from Bungie after the explosion of outrage and disappointment:
“All we confirmed to EGM for their sweet, mind-twitterpating Campaign reveal (and other massive feature reveal) regarding Cooperative Play in Halo 3’s Campaign is that System Link co-op will be included in Halo 3. Just like we told EGM, we’re aware that people want co-op online but the challenge of getting our complicated A.I. systems, huge game world, and gargantuan encounters neatly packaged and transferring across the Interwebz is a mythic undertaking.”

And JRWS, as I said earlier with the static enemy placement and simple AI made it possible for Doom.
Yes I know Doom is like 15 years old but many next gen games will have online Co-op, games like 2 worlds having I think 8 player co-op. How much different is having system link vs. Xbox live? Also sand box games like Crackdown? I really think it is only an issue because it was not built in from the beginning and as an after thought it now poses problems. Good link thanks for the info Punkster you rock
Why don’t people understand this. It is hard to implement Online co/op because their is so much information that has through go through a High speed internet connection. On system link it is about 100mbs but for a internet connection the information has to go through a 1mb connection. They want everybody to be able to play halo 3 online co/op with very little lag. This seems bad news, but if online co/op isn’t abvalible at launch then I will just use XbConnect like for the orginial Halo, in uses system link through an internet connection.
Yeh, just use Xbox Connect or something if there isn’t an official online coop.
